They say that when you repeatedly witness the traumatic/tragic events of others, the same chemicals fire in your brain as if you or your own loved ones were experiencing the crisis yourselves.
➖
After repeat exposure to these types of situations, without an effective way to process, you can develop what the medical community calls Compassion Fatigue or Secondary Traumatic Stress.
➖
Compassion fatigue is commonly found in people working in public service, especially healthcare, but as we are all now very aware, trauma and tragedy are on blast everywhere. Whether you’ve lived with trauma and tragedy being a normal part of your life, or you are just now getting exposed to it on repeat, you may be experiencing this condition, regardless if you work in medicine or not.
➖
Dr. Caroline Leaf, a cognitive neuroscience with an amazing record of helping people move forward through some of the most debilitating of setbacks. She will be speaking about compassion fatigue and giving real solutions and resources on how to maintain empathy and resiliency in the midst of continuous adverse circumstances. This talk was created for anyone working on the frontlines during the pandemic, but with everything going in our nation, we are opening it to everyone. If you or someone you know works on the frontlines (social services, mental health, healthcare, first responders, etc.) or may be just suffering from compassion fatigue.
